For Immediate Release: SDIRC Applauds CIR ASAP Act of 2009

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium (SDIRC) applauds Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez’s introduction of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity (CIR ASAP) Act of 2009.

“As a consortium comprised of community, faith, labor, and legal organizations, we are encouraged by this proposal to offer a practical and humane solution to a pressing issue that impacts San Diego,” stated Estela DeLosRios, Chair of the SDIRC, and Executive Director of the Center for Social Advocacy.

“In this season of hope, the legislation is a candle of light that promises a better future for children who are torn from their parents and siblings,” said Sister RayMonda DuVall, Executive Director of Catholic Charities, which is part of the SDIRC.  “It’s time we act in a just manner to keep families together.”

Peter Zschiesche, the Executive Director of the Employee Rights Center, also a part of the SDIRC stated, “Comprehensive immigration reform will not only address the crisis of civil and human rights in this country, it will help strengthen our economy, our labor force and ensure that we as a society will continue to live up to the high moral standards we have been known for.”

Speaking on behalf of the American Lawyers Association, San Diego chapter, which is also a part of the SDIRC, Donald Sheppard added, “Simply because the economy has declined, does not mean our moral standards should decline as well. On the contrary, our character as a society is best defined during difficult times, and we believe that we can make the right decisions in this time of crisis. This bill is a right decision.”

Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez, introduced the CIR ASAP Act of 2009 today along with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Black Caucus, Asian Pacific American Caucus and Progressive Caucus to the U.S. House of Representatives.
