2011 LEGISLATIVE REVIEW:
Immigrant Day Platform Priority Bills Signed by Governor Brown (Click to download an informational PDF)
Governor Brown has signed a significant number of bills that were listed on this year’s Immigrant Day Platform. These new laws will have significant impact on immigrant communities in California. They represent huge steps forward in providing critical support and civil rights protection for immigrants and their families. It has taken many years of advocacy to get us to this important, even historic, moment.
Due to our collective advocacy, strides have been made towards legislative solutions that will protect assistance to families, give top students a chance to improve their lives, protect civil liberties, and prevent job-killing mandates.
We believe that Governor Brown’s actions on these bills signal an unprecedented opening for us all to work in the coming years with his office at addressing many problems that face immigrants as well as to develop policies that take into account the critical role immigrants play in our state’s economy and future.
Governor Brown’s leadership signals his understanding how important immigrants are to California and his willingness to hear ideas from the community of immigrants, advocates and others interested in moving our state forward. We look eagerly toward working with the Governor on vital issues still left on the table following this legislative session, including the TRUST Act and Domestic Workers Bill of Rights that will continue to move forward through the legislative process in January.

The San Diego LGBT Community Center Update
- Freedom to Serve: On Tuesday, September 20, 2011, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell officially expired and LGB Servicemembers are no longer subject to discharge from the military on the basis of their sexual orientation. For this historic occasion we celebrated their long overdue Freedom to Serve at The Center. We heard from Eric Alva, a gay Marine who was the first American to be wounded in war in Iraq. We also heard from servicemembers, political representatives, and Michael Magee with Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, retired Col. Stewart Bornhoft and more.
- AIDS Walk & Run: This year our annual AIDS Wal & Run saw the participation of over 8,000 people. By walking, running, donating or volunteering this year, our supporters are helping to provide much-needed resources to some of San Diego’s most invaluable HIV/AIDS service organizations. A special thank you to our elected and appointed officials who walked with us, including California Assemblymember Toni Atkins, San Diego City Council President Tony Young, Councilmember Todd Gloria, Councilmember Sherri Lightner, Councilmember Carl DeMaio, Councilmember Marti Emerald and Chair of the Board of Port Commissioners Scott Peters, and to our emcee, Matt Johnson of Fox 5.
